RESEARCH

Bear Trust identifies current needs in terms of information, based on sound science, necessary for effective wildlife management and conservation. Bear Trust then develops research plans to address those needs. Bear Trust solicits wildlife agencies and research universities to become project partners for important wild bear research and then works collaboratively with partners on study design, grant writing, research implementation, data analyses, and results dissemination. Bear Trust also supports both the Eastern and Western Black Bear Workshops.

Bear Trust works closely with the International Association for Bear Research and Management (IBA) in selecting some research projects to support. Visit the IBA website for more information.

Past Projects

1. International Association for Bear Research and Management

Bear Trust frequently contributes to IBA to help fund projects and programs that the world’s leading bear biologists have agreed are essential cornerstones to address the priority conservation needs of the world’s bears.

2. 18th and 19th Eastern Black Bear Workshops

Bear Trust sponsored both workshops in 2005 and 2007 and donated Bear Trust items as give-aways to attendees.

3. Black Bears in the Rattlesnake River Area, Missoula MT

This is a University of Montana research project to study the impact of development in the Rattlesnake River area of western Montana related to black bears, and is part of Montana’s Living with Wildlife program.

4. Western Black Bear Workshop

Bear Trust was a major sponsor for the WBBW held in Reno Nevada in May 2008 and the one held at the NRA Whittington Center outside Raton, New Mexico in 2006.
